I had no idea that pinwheels were her favorite. Yet I had cut out a variety in bright and happy colors and decorated my buffet with them. I should have known then, that He had helped me plan, even though I still thought it to be a simple gesture of friendship. I served ice cream sundaes and root beer floats. Nothing fancy, just lots of fun!
We gathered to celebrate her birthday. I had asked everybody to bring a fun memory of the birthday girl, along with a word to describe her that began with one of the letters of her name. Some of us laughed to the point of tears. Others of us squealed with the delight of hearing these stories for the first time and some laughed harder because they had been a part of the story. And though I think we did a good job of celebrating her life and the gifts that she gives to each of us, we also ended up truly celebrating the Giver of every good and perfect gift.
It began with the birthday girl expressing her desire to thank Him more. She said she had run out of ways to say “thank you” and so had been studying the Psalms to inspire her. I talked about keeping abundance lists and counting to 1000 gifts. One by one, stories were shared of God’s faithfulness. Amazing stories… like a $50 bill found in a dryer vent, $1,000 paid on a couple’s electric bill, a month’s tuition paid for grandparents endeavoring to keep their grandson in a Christian school. We shared stories of how we had learned the principle of tithing, of God’s faithfulness, and of good and godly books we had read. We reminisced about times we had little and talked of the dreams we had of how we would give, should we came into a chunk of money.
I came away refreshed and inspired. I think others did as well. It started out as a simple birthday party and turned out to be something very much more. I am ready to do it again!
This week think of who you can celebrate and why. It doesn’t have to be a milestone birthday. It doesn’t even need to be a birthday. It doesn’t have to be extravagent or expensive. I do encourage you, though, to keep gathering together, keep encouraging one another, and keep laughing together.
