Through the Hands and Hearts of Others

“In God’s wisdom, He frequently chooses to meet our needs by showing His love toward us through the hands and hearts of others.”  Jack Hayford

In setting out to bless people in random ways, perhaps the greatest ‘success’ we had was when we were meeting practical needs.

We had prepared laundry packets to take to laundromats or dorms.  Each included 5 detergent pods, 5 dryer sheets and $2.00 worth of quarters.  They were packaged in autumn themed gift bags.

My team stopped at one particular laundromat equipped with these packets, some magazines, children’s books and a thermos full of hot chocolate. {It was a chilly morning.}Everyone in the laundromat was receptive, with the exception of one woman. She wanted little to do with us. The rest delighted in the hot chocolate, accepted the magazines and two little girls were the happy recipients of the children’s books.  Finally, with my last laundry packet in hand, I walked back over to the woman who was trying hard to ignore us.  I showed her the packet, explained what it’s contents were, and asked her if she would like it.  Less than enthusiastically, she said, yes and then turned back to me and quietly said, “thank you.”

As we drove away we talked in our van about how we understood her reluctance.  Life is hard sometimes.  Who gives you something with no strings attached? No invitation to church. No having to listen to a sales pitch. Just an outstretched hand containing something that you need.  Something practical. Laundry detergent in a laundromat.  We wished we had made up more of those packets. Admittedly, those were more expensive to make and so we had a limited number.

As we talked over lunch after both groups returned, we agreed that meeting the practical needs that people have was the most rewarding.  I will talk about some of the other practical needs we met, along with some of our new ideas, in future posts this month.

Today, I am thankful for the many times that my needs have been met through the hands and hearts of others.  Just last night I received a text from a friend telling me that she has a batch of beef brisket and buns for the Tuesday night kids that I feed.  The provision made for those Tuesday night meals has been miraculous.  Every week some sort of food has been delivered to my door – either to help with the meal or to gift to those that attend.  THAT is a whole other set of blogs!

Many this month are endeavoring to keep a gratitude list each day of November. It is a heartfelt effort to make Thanksgiving more than a holiday; to make it instead a way of life. Today, I encourage you to think about the times God has shown you His love through the hands and hearts of others.

Keeping Track With You,  Debbie~
