So this gratitude list-keeping thing is not a competition.
It’s not about who has the most things written down for the day or who says it most eloquently.
It’s about our hearts.
For days now this heart of mine has been overwhelmed with gratitude and awe at the work I see God doing in one of my friend’s hearts. I spent the day with her last weekend. Not even an hour after I dropped her off, I got a text… “So just decided to jump right into counting 1000 gifts and already have 50 down.”
Not much later I got the next text…”up to 126.”
Monday night, a third text… “260 gifts.”
260 gifts in 48 hours.
Friday came another text… “326 gifts.”
I have been thinking about this a lot. Counting our gifts, being thankful, offering gratitude for all that we have is exactly what we should be doing. I also know, however, that it can be as much of a discipline as any other habit we are cultivating in our lives.
For my friend, it is not a discipline. It is quite evidently, the overflow of her heart.
“There is so much joy in seeing how He uses our simple act of noticing the blessings He bestows all around us to transform our lives and the lives of those we touch.” – Ann Voskamp
The true evidence of great gratitude overflows and spills out into our lives. It has been an absolute honor and joy to gather with a group of women, to focus on noticing and offering thanks and to get to see lives transformed!
