So, these Acts of Kindness Adventures we keep venturing out on…
they are all about people.
We keep our eyes and hearts open to see those that are all around us.
But, if I were to share a glimpse of behind-the-scenes preparation for these days, I could introduce you to a whole other group of people. It is a whole other layer of kindness. They are not the ones that you will see in the pictures that “go”, but they are key people in helping us be prepared so that we CAN go.
I have a dear friend who faithfully and beautifully packages everything I send her way. This time out, I had collected a variety of different lotions, perfumes and body wash that people had donated. What I took to her in a bag was sent home with me in beautifully wrapped boxes and packages. When we handed one of those gifts to one woman she said,
“Why am I special today?”
The woman handing it to her told her, “You are special everyday.”
That’s the power of the packaging. Presentation + personal contact = high value.
This time out I also had another wonderful group of people volunteer to help package things up. Yet another layer of kindness. They are high school students in a special needs classroom. I have known their teacher for over 20 years and she thought it would be a great opportunity to teach them about giving, sharing and volunteering. So I took all the supplies and they packaged up kids’ cups for us. Each one had a bottle of bubbles, a bouncy ball, a snack and some candy. I recently took them a cake and goodie bags (that included the same kind of bouncy balls that they all had coveted) to thank them for a job well done! Their teacher told me that when they discovered those bouncy balls, it was the best she had seen them play together all school year!
Finally, four of our ladies went to a retirement home to make cards with a few of the residents there. Our gal in charge, provided supplies for them to make a card to give to a friend or loved one and a card to give to our troops in Afghanistan. The idea was brilliant! Include those women in our acts of kindness. Yet another layer of kindness. While we were being kind in visiting them, they were also giving in return.
Do you see layers of kindness in your own life? Acts of Kindness are as unique as you are. They don’t have to be complicated or expensive. What is it you have to share? What is it you have extra of? How can you notice another’s need and help in some way? It may be as simple as reaching something on a higher shelf for someone at the grocery store. It may be sharing a smile, your gentle spirit, or an encouraging word. Be watching this weekend for who you can surprise with kindness!
