Pump Cast Possibilities

I didn’t plan on watching anything on tv late last night. I had the news and weather on to see how long we were in a thunderstorm watch as I was listening to it pass by overhead.

The Jay Leno Show came on after the news. One of his first features was what he calls “Pump Cast News.” Somehow they set up cameras at a gas pump in Burbank, California. There is a tv monitor with a guy giving a fake newscast. He begins to ask people questions who are standing outside their cars, pumping gas. Many ignore him. He makes his comments more and more specific to their description to try and get their attention. Once he has their attention, he will dare them to do something for a free tank of gas.

This particular man, Will, was his ‘victim’ last night. The phony newscaster asked him if he would sing, promising him a free tank of gas. The thing is… Will can sing! Actually, he was pretty amazing! From one of the cameras you can see his wife in the car laughing as her husband adds a bit of  choreography to his lyrics. He finishes his song and she gets out of the car. The man on tv asks her if she will sing. She agrees. She adds a bit of dancing to her version of “Sweet Dreams” and her husband jumps in for a duet at certain parts. They were great!

Honestly, I  just wanted to stand up and cheer for them. I am a HUGE fan of The Voice {I wrote another story about that show at https://abundantlifestyle.wordpress.com/2012/02/21/you-have-a-voice/  but I am not delighting in anyone as much as I found myself delighting in and enjoying this couple.  Here’s the crazy thing… they were so good that Jay Leno had them singing with the band the whole hour last night.  What are the chances that a random and mundane stop at a gas station would end up featuring them on national television? Perhaps that’s what I love about this whole scenario.  It shows the fun but very real side of ‘possibilities!’   Many contestants on The Voice have trained for years for this big break in front of celebrity judges and a television audience. They went through a grueling audition process to get to where they are now. This couple simply stopped to get gas! I think of a definition of ‘luck’ that I have used many times through the years…”when preparation meets opportunity.”  I don’t know that either of them ever desired a career in the music industry but they stood with confidence behind the Tonight Show microphones and Will made his way through the audience like a rock star. They definitely said “YES!” to the opportunity that was presented to them!

I found myself smiling and inspired.  Here’s to spontaneous fun, being confident in our gifts and saying YES to new possibilities!
